Life and work got in the way so I am going to attempt to catch up this week – I am quite behind
Back in week 3 I viewed an archived webinar through BCR titled “Bite Size Marketing”. I had attended Wimba sessions previously so I knew the ropes a bit but I didn’t know I would enjoy this experience so much. Right away there were 2 things that really made an impact on me:
1 – Marketing is articulating your value
2 – When someone looks at your web site is it clear what you’re selling? What’s your library all about?
The whole session was good for me as our planning group is tackling issues of our web site and the creation of a new community web site as part of our strategic planning.
Another interesting tid bit – PUSH marketing is the “old way” and the NEW WAY is the Lone Ranger Marketing mix – think Twitter, Blogs, Facebook, etc.
On another note; email is getting overused and not that effective anymore because our patrons have to wade through so much clutter to even see our message. It can still be used for marketing but as part of the mix above (twitter etc.). It was pointed out that a very clever or intriguing subject line that gets the reader’s attention is a must!
So how do I feel about online meetings & training? I really like it – it’s easy & convenient and gives so many more people access to information. And it’s a lot easier to carve out one hour than the time you’d have to spend to travel to a meeting and back.
This has been a short week AND a busy one so I’m glad I already have a FB account set up to do this week’s lesson…
I have been using facebook primarily to stay in touch with my daughter (who lives in Tulsa) and to see new pics of the grandkids (Evan 4, Amelia 1 1/2). But it turned out to be a great way of connecting with relatives and friends too.
We have already planned to add our library to FB real soon – just need to work out the particulars.

It’s Friday, payday, we’re off for MLK,Jr Day Monday, AND the snow is slowly melting into the ground! It’s a wonderful day to be a librarian at the Basehor Community Library!
Here’s a question – how many steps a day does an average librarian take? I’m about to find out…with the new pedometer I’m wearing. Just started yesterday and it was only 3,954 steps. Not too good because the goal is 10,000 per day. Anyone out there have any pedometer stories to share? My goal is to get more steps in each day until I get to 10,000 – obviously all of those steps will not be at the library
That being said, I’m signing off for now and I’m going to go take a “walk about” the library.
Hello out there – my name is Jenne Laytham, mother of one and grandma of two. I am the assistant director of the Basehor Community Library, a beautiful facility built in 2008 just east of a corn field, south of an old farm, north of a new housing addition and just up the road from our world-renowned Holy-Field Winery. We love to give tours (of the library, not the winery) so stop by if you’re in the neighborhood or in the Kansas City metropolitan area.
I signed up for 23 Things Kansas because it is exciting to learn something new…and fun! I look forward to “meeting” all of you online and to the many informative lessons in the following weeks.
As an aside – this is also the first week of my a 12-week program I’m doing to become healthy. I am using the book, The Program: The Brain-Smart Approach to the Healthiest You: The Life-Changing 12-Week Method by Kelly Traver, M.D. Stay tuned…
Thanks Erin for the wonderful “instructional” – you did great
